I tried AVG. I didn't like the interface.
I tried BitDefender. I didn't like how it kept enabling Windows Defender, and it kept changing my settings so that I couldn't see hidden files.

Avira, even the free version is quite good!
Just update windows use noscript addon. Use some extra firewall like comodo plus some antivirus and remove java if you don't use it much. Or you could just use linux![]()
In my opinion:
- Avast
- Bitdefender
With addition to a good firewall such as:
- Comodo
- Outpost
But the BEST possible anti-virus is one that is free but yet so rarely used:
- Common sense.
brain.exe is awesome and its free , you can use commodo for added effect
My recommendation would be - Avira Antivir free / security suite.
Kaspersky pure
ESET Smart Security + malwarebytes(free) + comodo
kaspersky is a resource hog + biatch
AVG is a resource hog + biatch
Avast is a resource hog + biatch
